Conservation framing employs the use of materials that have been proven to protect and maintain art in as close to its original condition as possible. If the item you are framing represents an investment or has special importance to you it should be framed using conservation materials.

Matting is the border that surrounds your art. It add size and color to the piece, but more importantly, it adds a layer of protection. A mat keeps the glass from coming in contact with the artwork and provides room for air to circulate. The use of conservation quality matboard is essential to protecting your art. Lower quality paper contains acids and lignins which will “burn” the art that it surrounds.

UV light causes irreversible damage to your art work. Simply keeping artwork out of direct sunlight isn't enough. UV light is present in every light source found in your home. The easiest and most cost effective way to help prevent this damage is to use UV blocking glass. This product blocks 97‰ of damaging UV light.

Care should be taken to hang artwork where it will not be damaged by heat, UV light, or humidity. Hang out of direct sunlight, and never near a heat source or in an area of high humidity (such as a bathroom or fireplace wall).

Museum curators spend a great deal of time attempting to control the environmental conditions that effect artwork, however, such measures are impractical for your home. Be aware of light, temperature and humidity levels in rooms that contain valuable artwork. If you think that conditions in your home have not been ideal, bring your artwork in for an inspection. Catching a problem early may help to prevent irreversible damage.
